FOCCUS Coach Training

FOCCUS, an acronym for "Facilitating Open Couple Communication, Understanding and Study," is an internationally used instrument for marriage preparation. It is self-diagnostic and designed to help couples learn more about themselves and their unique relationship. It provides individualized couple feedback on where each partner stands in regard to topic areas important to marriage. FOCCUS was developed to reflect the values and ideals of marriage as sacred.

Only FOCCUS coaches can administer FOCCUS. The FOCCUS Inventory Report is always sent to a coach, not to the couple.
A FOCCUS coach functions as neither a teacher nor a counselor, although individual coaches may be skilled in both these areas. A coach’s role is to empower the couple to discuss the issues and move toward awareness and problem solving. The coach also helps couples identify and affirm their strengths. Referrals to educational programs and counseling are recommended; some models of FOCCUS integrate these elements.
The Facilitator’s Manual provides training and materials so that the coach can help couples identify patterns and issues. It also provides supplemental material for the optional use of the person(s) working with the couple.
FOCCUS was developed for use by both professional and trained lay coaches. Counselors should help couples discover that they can own and problem solve issues themselves, avoiding the temptation to counsel and trained lay coaches need to avoid teaching or telling their own stories rather than concentrating on the couples.

Married Couple Rate: $100 (1 manual, 2 trainings)

For those who are already trained FOCCUS coaches and who do not need to purchase a facilitator manual, we invite you to participate in any scheduled training session as a refresher at the following reduced rates:

Individual Refresher: $20 (1 training)

Married Couple Refresher: $30 (2 trainings)

FOCCUS is an instrument for marriage preparation. Recently revised, it includes special subset questions: questions for interfaith marriages, second marriages, and cohabiting couples.
